The Marijuana Confusion In Islam?

By admin Posted in: alternative medicine

I have been reading on this topic for more than a month now and cannot find a proper answer, and what bothers me the most is many preachers, (Sheikh) are saying its forbidden and many others are saying it is not, and each one is making up a different reason, each is answering based on what they would personally do, but most are running around the answer in circles not giving a clear answer, why is this confusion?
I know that many people think they know just because the image of marijuana in their head is a homeless drug addict, so they immediately say it is forbidden because of it being a gateway to drugs, I 100% agree with that, but also it could be used in many good in tensions, and even though marijuana in the first place is a natural plant and not considered a drug, some preachers classify that in the same sentence of heavy drugs because by “Law” it is illegal. Many are not aware why the real reason of marijuana being illegal. Marijuana is illegal is because it could be used as an alternative to a huge amount of the things we daily use in our lives, from medicine to clothes and paper and so on, which will also save many trees, but will make governments and Drug companies close lots and lots of money. Marijuana is like the “too good to be true”, so they cant legalize it, there are so many things out there much worse than Marijuana (Not saying it is bad) that are 100% legal where people consume everyday.
I am aware that all relaxants and intoxicants are Haram in islam, and I believe in that, but my question here is what if you use it for medicinal purposes? I quit smoking cigarettes around 5 months ago and been having digestive problems since then, and the only natural thing that fixes it instantly is marijuana, I do not like to take medicine because I do not believe that any of it does any more good than bad.
If Relaxants and Intoxicants are Forbidden then every medicine out there should be forbidden, medicines are filled with junk and strange chemical names that people blindly consume, cigarettes are intoxicants, they are forbidden but no one cares because it makes lots of money too, just like alcohol, even in most muslim countries it is sold allover.
I am not trying to say that it should be ok in Islam to smoke Marijuana, and not saying it should be forbidden, but all im saying is; shouldn’t it be based on the intention? it does help me, and it is one of the reasons why I became more spiritual in my life and decided to be closer to God (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala).
I just want a reasonable answer that is derived directly from the Purity of islam, not Islam + “what I personally think”, I stopped consuming marijuana since a while because I do not know what to do and im having digestive problems again, it is getting better over time but without Marijuana the process is really slow. Even Soft soda drinks like Pepsi and Coke are very bad for the body, no one ever wanted to forbid them. if you do not have an answer all advices are much appreciated, since im still researching into this specific subject.
P.S: I did not post this question on an Islamic forum because I have tried and seen that, none have a direct answer, and it causes a bit of tension between users since many have different opinions.
I do not mean to offend anyone in my question, but im sure you can understand the insanity someone could go through seeking true knowledge :)
Peace and God bless!
your brother in Islam.

–”I know that many people think they know just because the image of marijuana in their head is a homeless drug addict, so they immediately say it is forbidden because of it being a gateway to drugs, I 100% agree with that,”–
I, along with medical studies, 100% disagree with this.
It’s less addictive than cigarettes/tobacco, thus Hookah is considered to be a more addictive. It seems the majority of my Muslims friends smoke Hookah on a regular basis, some even do it everyday.

Number 1. Your God does not care what you consume or he wouldn’t have put it there.
    2. I am a pothead and I can honestly say it is one of the most useful plants to use as medication.
It is completely natural and you should grow some yourself. You never know when someone might give you unnatural things and THEN it would be wrong.

  9. Alya Says

    Dear brother,
    hope it will help :)
let’s remember that our common ground is: marijuana IS haram.
    Narrations indicating impermissibility:
    1) Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Indeed Allah has sent down both illness and it’s cure, and He has appointed a cure for every illness, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no: 3870)
    2) Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) forbade from (using) impure medicine.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no: 3866)
    3) Tariq ibn Suwayd or Suwayd ibn Tariq asked the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) regarding wine, but he forbade it. He again asked him, but he forbade him. He said to him: “O Messenger of Allah! It is a medicine”. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “No it is a illness.” (Sunan Abu Dawud, no: 3869)
    Evidences of permissibility:
    1) Allah Most High says:
“He (Allah) has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name has been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits, then he is guiltless. For Allah is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.” (Surah al-Baqarah, V: 173)
    2) Sayyiduna Anas (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some people came from (the tribe of) ‘Ukl or ‘Urayna and became ill in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) commanded them to go to the milk-camels and to drink their urine and milk (for their treatment)….. (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 231)
    3) Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) permitted Zubayr and Abd al-Rahman (Allah be pleased with them both) to wear silk because of the itching they suffered from.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no: 5501)
Wearing of silk has been categorically forbidden for men by the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace), yet it was allowed for medical purposes.
As far as the narrations indicating the impermissibility of using unlawful medication are concerned, they (according to the scholars who permit using unlawful medication) refer to the situation where an alternative is available. Hence, in such a case, it would indeed be unlawful to avail of Haram medicine.
Similarly, it will be Haram to use unlawful medication when there is uncertainty in the medication being a cure for one’s illness; hence, the narrations refer to the situation where there is uncertainty.
The above explanation should have answered your question, in that if the medicine is known to be effective and no other alternative is available, it will be permitted to avail of it. This, however, needs to be established by an expert Muslim doctor. Thus, explain the Shariah perspective to an expert Muslim Doctor and seek his advice.
    And Allah knows best

No comment on majiuana in the Muslim community/countries, just like to point out that it is NOT in fact a gateway drug — it has been proven, there is much research to support this fact.
It being called a gateway drug is propaganda, a means of control.

  11. whatever Says

Cannabis India is a well known medicine and relaxant in both Hindu and Muslim cultures. The sacred herb itself is innocent of any harm to humans and in fact can offer many medicinal and contemplative benefits. From Pakistan to Russia, from Turkey to Afghanistan, from the Indus valley to the Himalayas, this sacred substance has been used by many, of all religions, for healing and spiritual opening. The only problem with it today is that it has been pushed into the black market by western gov ts. and has become subject to the abuses of production and distribution by criminals and the abuses of use by the naive.

Never get caught with it. I was living in Kuwait (My dad worked there.) , and I was told you could get death penalty with a small amount =/ .
    But I was 5 so I didn’t care lol.
Muslim countries do NOT play around when it comes to drugs and alcohol.
