My goldfish Floxie is in the last stages of a fungal infection I didn’t recognize in time. I thought it was ich, and her cloudy eyes were a bacterial problem… I treated her for everything except what she had. Now she’s miserable, and her tank mate is dead… her tail is ragged in ribbons, her skin coated in trails of white slime, her eyes completely covered in giant balls of cotton. She’s blind, swimming in circles, running into the walls.
She’s either in tremendous pain, or unbearable discomfort. I have no faith in the all-purpose medicine I started using today… it specifies that it’s most effective “at the first sign.” Her tank mate died a few hours after I dosed the tank.
I can’t stand to see her suffering anymore. I don’t think she’s going to pull out of this- even if she does, she’ll have a miserable quality of life; blind and alone. I need a humane way to put her out of her misery… I don’t believe in flushing fish, or whacking them on the head. I would rather try the clove oil/vodka method… but I don’t HAVE any clove oil or vodka. Is there any alternative substance to these two that you KNOW works?

Unfortunately, I’m not sure about alternitives to vodka or clove oil, and I think that its in-humane to freeze fish to kill them, as they will know what is happening, and although it would be shortlived, the extra pain from that would be horrendous. I also think its inhumane to whack them and to flush them. The Problem with flushing fish is that they don’t die quickly, infact they tend to starve to death, or in your case, die of illness, so good job deciding against those options.
If I were you, I’d see a vet about your fish, and ask for their opinion on what to do. I think thats the best thing for you at the moment. Also, I’m not sure if they put fish to sleep, or anything like that, but I’d mention it, as its clear that you care about your fish and don’t want it to have a traumatic death, particularly after all its been through. If taking this opition, it would obviously be difficult to take it to the vets, so I’d take pictures, and then, if your vet will ‘put it to sleep’, take it in a bag that you get from your L.F.S (Local Fish Store), or whatever your vet recommends.
Hope I Helped and sorry about your fish = [
I would just pop out to your local chemist and buy some clove oil, its fairly cheap.
just make sure you do it right, add ten drops to the water(ish) dependign on the size of the fish, if you dont add too much or add too little then it won’t be pleasent for the fish. the first ten drops should sedate it so it falls asleep. Then add more to overdose it so it doesn’t wake up.
i am soooooo sorry to here about your fish i am sorry i dont now any other treatments to cure her i found this website for you with lots of diffrent meds for about £2.99
i hope your fish gets better
ok well just give it to the vet let them do it instead of killing that wont do anything and well next time you know now keep an eye on youre fish they arent just for displaying they are our pets i treat them the way a person would treat theirdogs, cats, birds…
Stick it in a small plastic bag of water and freeze it.
Once the water gets cold enough the fish “goes to sleep” and when it’s frozen, then it’s dead.
Pretty humane on the scale of things.

I say take a bag and slowly freeze it.
Or release it into a pond or something so you dont have to deal with its death.
Or release into a river or spring it might recover.
Freezing will not cause the fish more pain. Fish like goldfish are designed by nature to drop into a hibernative state when the temp drops below a certain point. Goldfish that people over-winter in their ponds do this for the whole winter. In your case, he will simply die in his sleep.
I suspect this method is less painful than vodka or clove oil. I did the clove oil thing once, and it didn’t look very humane to me.
In regards to the last answer-
Never release an aquarium fish into wild waters.
Your own isolated backyard pond is fine, but placing it into wild waters introduces a non-indigenous species into the ecosystem of the area, and can cause a whole lot of damage to the local wildlife.
AW! poor fishies.)’:
Don’t listen to anyone who says you don’t care. Besides clove oil like you mentioned, freezing is a good option. Eventually, all of his systems will shut down, and humanely [some what] he will pass on.
EDIT: DO NOT take your fish to the vet. The vet isn’t even open right now, and by then your fish would have most likely passed on. What is your vet going to do? Give it gas to die. No, a vet will most likely do anything you could have done with a much bigger bill.(:
