Lizard’s Tail Rotting Off?

By admin Posted in: chinese blood

Okay well this morning i picked up my 12 year old Chinese Water Dragon as I usually do and it looks like the end of his tail is going to fall off. I put him in the tub to get a closer look and it’s all shriveled up and twisted. An old blood clot floated off of it but other than that it’s pretty much dead. Now I’m not some sicko animal neglect-er, he is old. We rescued him from some lady off craigslist who had him in a bad environment.
So is he dying? Like do they just fall apart when they get old or did he hurt himself? He let me touch it and acted as if it had no feeling left at all. Weird for him, he’s always been protective of it. And I have noticed him kinda losing it in the head lately. Acting strange and hiding his food.
Should I see if it falls off and heals? Or should I ultimately put him to sleep before he is in pain? If anybody knows anything about elderly Chinese Water Dragons please let me know.

I would watch the part of the tail above the end that looks dead. If it doesn’t look like the “dead’ part is spreading-the rest of the tail turning black, then I would just leave it alone and it will fall off eventually. My monitor has lost about 2-3 inches off her tail and she is doing just fine. Sometimes skin doesn’t shed right or they may have caught it on something in the tank. You already said he did react when you touched it, to me that means that part is dead and he doesn’t care what happens to it anymore, but know that also means he isn’t in pain from it. Keep an eye on him and he should be fine. Or you can take him to a vet ask for his opinion and have the vet amputate the tip of the tail that is dead.

Have you seen a vet about it? It sounds like something cut off the circulation and the tail is dead.
